ABOUT GOURDS AND PATRICK LOAFMAN'S GOURD ART
Hard-shelled gourds and humans share an ancient history: People used gourds to hold water and wine, to cook stews and store grain, long before pottery and weaving were invented. Patrick Loafman of Elwha River Gourd Art became interested in gourds over a decade ago, and drew on his experience with pen and ink drawing to try pyrography (woodburning) on gourds. He has experimented with a variety of dyes, stains, watercolors, acrylics and shoe polishes on gourds for coloration. Patrick, a wildlife biologist, brings a passion for nature into stunning realistic wildlife portraits burned into gourds. He is also a musician who makes and plays his own hand-crafted gourd banjo as well as gourd drums, thumb pianos, rainsticks, shekeries, rattles and even a didgeradoo. Patrick now also uses pyrography on watercolor paper.
